You get a good idea of the enormous amount effort required in the extraction and production of oil when you get a chance to see huge superstructure of an offshore oil platform up close. The colossal steel structures are positioned in the middle of the ocean and are very visible - even from quite a distance. Some even qualify in the list of largest man-made structures in the world.
 

Work on an oil platform is often dirty, hard, and last but not least, dangerous. The dangers of fires and explosions, the difficult working conditions during high seas, and the isolation from the outside world are problems that crews must deal with on a daily basis.
