 Ataturk

Mustafa Kemal (1881 to 1937), known since 1934 as Ataturk (Father of the Turks), is still hailed today as the founding father of modern Turkey. Memorials to him are located in each marketplace and schoolyard. His portrait hangs in public offices, classrooms, and shops.

On October 29th, the national holiday celebrating the founding of modern Turkey in 1923, all public buildings, as well as many private properties, will be decorated with pictures of Ataturk and the Turkish flag. The six principles of Ataturk's Kemalism (nationalism, secularism, republicanism, populism, statism, and reformism) are still the pillars of Turkish government today.
